Multi-disciplinarity in Mathematical & Computational tools
Dr Portes will be talking about his multi-disciplinary scientific career and experience, connecting everything into a coherent narrative under the umbrella concept of “data science”. Specifically, it is a story about the development, adaptation and application of mathematical/computational tools to visualise, interpret and interrogate datasets from diverse scientific fields. Ranging from human motor behaviour (in spots science), cardio-respiratory analysis, genetic data in cancer immunotherapy, synchronisation of chaotic systems and brain activity, and more recently, oil & gas data and field geochemistry.
Prior to joining DARE, Leonardo Portes was a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Exploration Targeting at The University of Western Australia. He completed his MSc and PhD, followed by two postdoctoral positions, at the University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil). He joined the University of Western Australia in 2018 as a Research Fellow in the Dept of Mathematics and Statistics.
He was recently granted the Australian Global Talent Visa in Data Science/DigiTech in recognition of his scientific carrier and industry engagement. His expertise could be more broadly described as statistics, statistical physics and data science.
