Hacky Hour – Parallel Programming II: Explicit Multithreading

10 November @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Unlock the power of parallel programming in this Friday Afternoon Hacky Hour focusing on Explicit Multithreading!

The Explicit Multithreading session will introduce parallel programming for shared memory environments. Threaded programming topics such as forks and joins, mutexes, deadlocks and condition variables will be covered. The session will help you turbo-boost your computing work on multicore computing systems.

The Session

The DARE “Friday Afternoon Hacky Hour” sessions are a casual, interactive way to develop computing skills. You will need a laptop, and may need to take a small amount of time beforehand to prepare.

The session will be hybrid, although we recommend joining us in person, if you can, as you’ll likely get more out of it! Snacks will be provided.

Recommended prior knowledge includes: Docker and C++, Python, R (or closely commensurate languages).

Future Sessions

This is part two of a series of four sessions on Parallel Programming. Although the four sessions complement each other, you are welcome to attend a single session.

  1. Message Passing
  2. Explicit Multithreading
  3. Implicit Multithreading
  4. Data Challenge: Parallelising Gravitational Soil Water Transport
